Preying primarily on males less than half their age, the appetite of the Coal Harbour cougar reflects the fact they are both specialists and opportunists. Found all over the downtown core, their natural habitat includes luxury condos, the seawall, high-end restaurants and nightclubs. Attacks are frequent, so it is natural to be alarmed in an encounter. For distances of less than 50 meters, where the cougar is staring intensely, it may be assessing the chances of a successful attack. If intense staring is accompanied by licking of the lips or a flip of their hair, the risk of attack may be substantial. Do not approach a cougar; give them the opportunity to move on. Slowly back away, while maintaining awareness of their position through your peripheral vision. Do not run from a cougar, running may trigger a predatory response.
